To avoid clashes among party workers over tickets during the upcoming municipal elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to make them take a vow against it.
It is holding a workers’ meet — Vijay Sankalp Diwas — at Ramlila Grounds on Sunday, in which workers will take an oath that they will work for the party even if they do not get a ticket.
“Like in every election, those who don’t get tickets have fallout and decide to spoil the prospects of those who do manage to secure one. To avoid such a situation, workers will take a pledge that they will work to ensure the party’s candidates victory in the polls,” said a BJP leader.
A BJP source said the decision has come from Delhi BJP in-charge, Venkaiah Naidu, who discussed the matter with the party councillors, MLAs and district presidents in a meeting on Thursday. “Party leaders are not really sure if the pledge will help the situation, but they are hopeful that at least some people will take it seriously,” said a BJP councillor who attended the meeting.
The Delhi BJP has clarified that function at Ramlila Grounds will be the workers’ conference and not a public meet.
As per the plan, senior BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani will address workers of 11,158 polling booth committees falling under 279 mandals of 14 districts of the party. Leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley, Naidu and MP and national president of BJP Mahila Morcha Smriti Irani will address the party workers.
