After being hit by a rise in the number of cases of motor vehicle thefts every other year, the police have finally decided to crack down on offenders.

"We will make sure that the number of vehicle thefts in the city go down. There has been an increase in the number of arrests and many auto lifters have been booked under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA)," said BK Gupta, Delhi Police Commissioner.

Motor vehicle thefts went up from 9,913 in 2009 to 13,992 last year, an increase of more than 4,079 cases.

The holiday week between December 25 and December 31, 2010 saw as many as 527 cars and bikes being stolen in the national Capital.

Gupta said Delhi needed "people-friendly and responsive" policing, which would do away with the public's reluctance to approach the police to redress their grievances.

"If people are afraid of approaching us, there is no point. A complainant approaches us because of being distressed. He/she needs to be heard compassionately."
