If an auto driver is found without the badge, his permit for running the auto will be suspended for a month and a hefty fine will be imposed on him.

The traffic police have launched the initiative based on specific inputs about a number of unauthorised autos plying on city roads.

"We have information that many auto drivers do not possess PSVs. This means they are not authorised to drive autos on city roads. We cannot compromise on safety and security of commuters," said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

An auto driver without a PSV batch would be slapped with a fine of Rs 100 and the owner of the vehicle would be issued a challan of Rs 2000 for violation of the permit. Besides, the permit will be suspended immediately for up to 30 days.

Delhi has 55,000 autos registered with the transport department.

Seven months after the Supreme Court had lifted the ban on the registration of new auto-rickshaws in Delhi, the transport department is yet to start registration of new autos.
