Train backtracks from platform

The freak incident, however, did not lead to any accident.The incident happened at 12.15pm on Friday after the train arrived at platform number 11 of the station.

The train, which was stationary, suddenly started rolling back on its own and covered about 200metres before it was stopped.

Northern Railways, however, has claimed that all passengers had deboarded the train before the incident happened.

“The incoming train was to be taken to the yard for cleaning. However, the train started to roll back on its own,” said a Northern Railway spokesman.

“No one was injured and there was no chance of another train coming to the same platform,” the spokesman added.

Sources said that between Shivaji Bridge (the closest station) and New Delhi Railway Station, there is a slight slope and the train started to move back due to the incline towards the Minto Bridge.

Also, the Railways made no comments on the engine driver, who should have been controlling the locomotive.

According to sources, as the train started moving on its own and gained some speed, it resulted in a ‘point burst’, which means it crossed the point where tracks change over. The changing of tracks is managed from a control cabin.

With nothing stopping the train on its journey back, stones were hurriedly put on the track to break its movement. The impromptu plan worked and the train finally stopped some distance away.
