Two engineering students were killed in southwest Delhi on Thursday evening after the sedan they were driving rammed an electricity pole.

Police said the victims - identified as Anup (24) and Abhimanyu (24) - were pursuing a Bachelor in Computer Application course at a private college and were on their way to Najafgarh when the incident took place.

"Around 4:30 pm, when the two were crossing the Chhawla area, they apparently failed to spot an electricity pole and collided with it," an officer said.

The police said they were informed about the accident by local residents who rushed the duo to the Rao Tula Ram Memorial hospital where they were declared dead by the doctors.

The doctors attributed the deaths to fatal head injuries. The victims' families were informed and told the police that the duo had left their respective homes minutes before the accident.

"The car was registered in Anup's name. He was a resident of Najafgarh and had driven down to Abhimanyu's home in the Rewla Khanpur area before heading towards their college," said the officer.

The police said a case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving had been registered at the Chhawla police station. A post-mortem was conducted on the bodies before they were handed over to the respective families on Friday.
