Two held for assaulting cop

An assistant librarian in a municipal library and his female friend, both in their late twenties, were arrested on Monday by the Rani Bagh police of northwest district for allegedly obstructing and assaulting a policeman on duty under the influence of liquor.

The woman allegedly threatened the cop saying she would tear her clothes and would implicate him in a false molestation case, said police sources.

The arrested duo have been identified as Deepak Kumar, assistant librarian, and Preeti Verma. A case under appropriate sections of the IPC was registered against them and they were subsequently arrested.

P Karunakaran, deputy commissioner of police (northwest), said on Monday they had received a call in the police control room regarding an accident, near a petrol pump close to a shopping mall in Rani Bagh area.

"Head constable Sahan Singh rushed to the spot to attend to the call. He found two men having a heated argument over a minor accident between a motorcycle and a Maruti SX4 car. Singh intervened into the matter and tried to pacify both of them," said Karunakaran adding the driver of the car looked very aggressive and he started misbehaving with Singh.

Meanwhile, a woman inside the car came out and started hurling abuses. She threatened to tear her clothes in order to implicate them in a false case.

"When the head constable advised her to mind her language, she assaulted him and caught hold of his collar. She also threatened to file molestation charges against him. Both of them were apprehended and their medical examination confirmed that they were under the influence of liquor," added Karunakaran.
