Two class 12 students died after they failed to spot a speeding train while crossing railway tracks. The incident took place at the Bawana Railway crossing in outer Delhi’s Narela area on Thursday morning, police said.

“The incident occurred at 8am. The victims have been identified as Tamanna Dudwani and Nikita Sen Gupta. Both the 17-year-olds were class 12 students at Maharaja Agrasen School,” said Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (outer). Both lived in Narela’s A-block.

According to police, the girls were going home after dropping Nikita’s younger brother to their school. “Witnesses have told us that the girls had scaled the gate and were crossing the track while listening to the radio.

They failed to spot the Chandigarh-Delhi Shatabdi Express and got run over,” said a senior police officer.

Such was the impact of the hit that the girls were tossed several metres upwards and fell at different spots on the ground in opposite directions.

Tamanna’s father Kamal Kumar, who works at a private company, said he and Ankita’s mother were out looking for the girls when bystanders told them about the incident.

“I had called Tamanna on her mobile phone at 7.30am and she’d told me that she was on her way and would reach home in 5-10 minutes. At around 9am Ankita’s mother and I left our homes to search for them,” Kumar said.

While Kumar hails from Rajasthan, Ankita’s family hails from West Bengal. Her father, Samarjeet Sen Gupta, was not at home when the incident took place.
