UP claims removal of 5000 trucks of debris

The Uttar Pradesh government has claimed it has removed around 50,000 tonnes (5,000 truckloads) of rubble from the Yamuna riverbed under its jurisdiction. Darpan Singh reports.

The Uttar Pradesh government has claimed it has removed around 50,000 tonnes (5,000 truckloads) of rubble from the Yamuna riverbed under its jurisdiction.

The government, while stating that it did not know who was dumping the debris, said removal of the debris would continue.

State chief secretary Jawed Usmani, in response to a question, claimed unknown people and organizations were dumping waste on the UP irrigation department’s land.

In an affidavit before the National Green Tribunal, Usmani has said complaints naming transport companies, trucks and tractors seen at the site were lodged with relevant authorities of the Delhi government. He said he was not aware of any action taken so far.

The UP irrigation department said it had not generated any debris in the last 10 years as construction and demolition is not part of its mandate.
