The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader slammed the UPA for its "misgovernance” that had created a trust deficit among the people.

“The greatest challenge facing India is to restore the trust of the people,” Modi told NRIs spread across 18 US cities.

Once again selling the ‘Gujarat success story’, Modi said history would acknowledge his development model, “no matter what critics say”.

Critics have pointed out gaps in the much-hailed development model of Gujarat, calling it lopsided as social development indicators remain poor in the state.

However, Modi talked about “inclusive development” and claimed that development had reached even the remote areas of Gujarat.

The four-time chief minister cited the latest CAG report and said Gujarat was the most successful state in India to tackle malnutrition at 33%.

“The world is watching Gujarat’s progress,” said the BJP leader.

Modi lauded Gujaratis for being a global community and called them the cultural ambassadors of India. He also sought the contribution of the overseas Gujarati community to build a statue of Sardar Patel, which would be called the ‘Statue of Unity’.

“It will be double the size of the Statue of Liberty,” said Modi.
