VC addresses DU students

In an unprecedented gesture, Delhi University vice chancellor, Dinesh Singh met over 3,000 students from across all the colleges of the varsity on Monday. Singh, who took over as the vice chancellor (VC) on October 29, 2010 announced a host of administrative reforms and students' welfare initiatives.

Although each college was asked to send atleast 30 students, a lot more turned up at the university's indoor stadium, which was packed to capacity.

If the chaste Hindi used by Singh to address the students was any indication, the meet was a move on the part of the administration to reach out to students from across colleges and media of instruction.

"What happens most of the time is that students do not even know who are the people in charge or what are the reforms and facilities the university is planning for students," said Singh, introducing the varsity's office bearers to students.

"DU does not even rank among the world’s top 250 universities. This sort of interaction helps us get feedback from students, which, in turn, will help us improve," added Singh.

However, the loudest cheer came from female students when the VC announced a new girls' hostel in North Campus, which can accommodate up to 1,500 undergraduate students. This hostel will be built soon.

The VC later asked students to fill up a feedback form and also addressed queries ranging from teacher absenteeism to students' security.

"This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us; we should have this more often,” said Radhika Sharma, a first-year student of Bharti College.
