Want to work while studying? IGNOU is a good option

One of the biggest universities of the country, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has emerged as a good option for those who want to work while study besides those who couldn't secure a seat in courses and colleges of their choice. HT reports.

One of the biggest universities of the country, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has emerged as a good option for those who want to work while study besides those who couldn't secure a seat in courses and colleges of their choice. IGNOU offers a variety of undergraduate programmes such as a certificate, diploma and degree. "The most popular programmes at the undergraduate level are in BCom, sociology, psychology, economics, social work and BSc-IT. We get about 50,000 applicants for each programme," said Pankaj Khare, registrar, admissions, IGNOU.

The system of education for the undergraduate courses in social sciences is flexible. Students take admission in a Bachelor of Arts degree and after completing the first year, they take up a major field of study.

"This is a very different but student-friendly approach. Even Ambedkar University has adopted this system for their their programmes. Also, we don't have honours programmes. We have a majors programme, where a major part of his study is going to be of that particular discipline," said Khare.

The university provides printed study material, tele-conference facilities with lecturers and online support programmes. "We are also planning to start a special drive in four learning centres in the Delhi-NCR region. We plan to offer regular classes for students. Weekly or evening classes will be held," Khare added.

The last date to apply for the undergraduate courses is July 29. Those who miss this date can also apply till August 31 with a late fee of Rs 200.
