Criticised by the Opposition for allegedly “softening” its stand against UP Chief Minister Mayawati, the CBI has told the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) that it is firm on prosecuting her in the disproportionate assets case.

“There is no change in the CBI’s stand. The CBI has told us that nowhere in the recent affidavits before the Supreme Court did it say it was willing to review the earlier stand on prosecuting Mayawati,” a source in the CVC said.
The case came under the CVC’s scrutiny after reports that Attorney General G.E. Vahanvati had apprised the SC that the CBI would need time to take a re-look at the case in view of the representation made by the CM.
In 2006, the CVC had scrutinised the material collected by the CBI and concluded there was enough evidence to prosecute her. Subsequently, a disproportionate assets case was registered against her.
