The sacking of railway minister Dinesh Trivedi by her party chief Mamata Banerjee has raised questions about what happens to the budget he presented in Parliament on Wednesday.

“The railway budget is the property of the House now. The new minister will take further steps,” former Lok Sabha secretary-general PDT Achary told HT.

Banerjee is expected to get the new minister to announce a rollback in passenger fares or changes in proposals during a discussion on the budget in Parliament.

In the absence of a new railway minister, the prime minister will have to steer the budget through Parliament.
Achary said there was no instance of a railway minister being removed from the post on the day the railway budget was presented.

“Not to my knowledge,” Achary said.
