New Delhi, led by CBI, had failed to secure the extradition of Dawood Ibrahim’s henchman in 1995 on the basis of Interpol Red Corner Notice and serial blast investigations.

Top government sources said Mirchi was arrested by Romford Police Station in London on the basis of a criminal complaint registered by one of his relatives. Mirchi allegedly threatened and had got into a brawl with his kin in London.

He was scheduled to be produced before a local court magistrate in London till reports came in late evening. “A Red Corner notice for the arrest of Mr. Iqbal Mirchi had been issued and continues to be valid, which means that he is a wanted person and that we do seek his extradition back to India. The processes involved for his extradition are being initiated,” said Ministry of External Affairs spokesman replying to a question on Mirchi’s arrest.

“We cannot seek Mirchi’s extradition on the basis of old evidence which was considered and rejected by British court in 1995 during his extradition proceedings,” said a senior official.

In fact, Indian security agencies, who approached their UK counterparts, were sounded out that Mirchi could even be released on bail unless India produces fresh evidences on the basis of testimonies of other Dawood henchmen arrested after the failed extradition.
