A 35-year-old mother of two was arrested for being the brains behind a gang of auto lifters that is alleged to have stolen more than 7,000 vehicles from the national capital region, police said on Saturday.
"The woman, identified as Nirmala Devi, was nabbed from her house in Gokulpuri. Six of her accomplices, including her brothers Vipin and Raju, were nabbed earlier," said a senior police officer adding that the police are considering slapping Maharashtra Control of Organized Criminal Activities (MCOCA) on her.
Police said the woman had entered the world of crime two years ago after a tiff with her husband who is a local criminal.
"The gang used to sell the stolen vehicles to several guerrilla outfits in northeastern India. Nirmala used to keep 40% of her earnings and used to distribute the rest among her gang members," the officer said.
Police said her questioning has revealed that the gang was operating two massive bank accounts, procured on the basis of fake documents, in Gurgaon.
"We have recovered R35 lakh from the accounts which are estimated to have funds worth crores," the officer added.
