'Women are leading save forests movement'

Union environment minister Jairam Ramesh on Monday said women all over the country are leading the 'Save our Forests' movement and with their partnership we would be able to achieve our goal. HT reports.

Union environment minister Jairam Ramesh on Monday said women all over the country are leading the 'Save our Forests' movement and with their partnership we would be able to achieve our goal.

"Right from the days of 'Chipko andolan', women have had an important role in saving forests. Even today, women across India are leading the save forest movement. With their support and partnership, we would definitely be able to achieve our goals," Ramesh said at a function held at the Delhi zoo to mark the World Forestry Day.

The minister further said, "We must finish de-greening before we start greening projects. This (de-greening) has been created by industrial construction."

He later distributed prizes to winners of the 'on the spot painting competition' organised for school children by the Delhi zoo. As many as 131 students from 32 schools from across Delhi-NCR participated in the competition that was held on March 17. The competition was divided in four groups (Class 1-5; Class 6-8; Class 9-10 and Class 11-12).
