The voting in Puducherry election 2021 will take place under strict Covid-19 protocol. The Election Commission has issued a protocol for voting. All poll officials will be vaccinated against Covid-19 before elections. The Puducherry election results 2021 will be announced on May 2. The previous assembly elections in Puducherry took place on May 16, 2016.
The tenure of the current legislative assembly of Puducherry couldn't be completed because of the resignation of Narayanaswamy. President's Rule was imposed in Puducherry after the fall of the government. According to the Constitution of India, President's Rule can remain in force for six months during which elections should be held and new government elected.
The UPA government - with Congress and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) as partners - came to power in Puducherry in 2016 after winning 18 seats. While Congress won 15 seats, DMK emerged victorious on three. But after a number of resignations from Congress members since July 2020, the strength of the assembly was reduced, but the Narayanaswamy government's numbers fell below the majority mark.
Of the 33 members of the Puducherry assembly, 30 are elected directly by voters and three are nominated by the central government.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Congress won the only Lok Sabha seat in the union territory.
