Ever since his production house Aamir Khan Productions started churning out films on a regular basis, Aamir Khan has built quite a reputation as a successful producer. Not only does he keep his films’ budget in check but also ensures that even his offbeat films make money at the box-office. The latest is that after his recent venture, Dhobi Ghat raked in the moolah at the ticket-windows, the actor-filmmaker gifted his wife and the film’s debutante director, Kiran Rao a BMW 5 series car.
It’s known that soon after the movie’s promotion started, Khan made it clear to the media that Dhobi Ghat was an experimental film and he didn’t want the audience to be misguided into believing that it’s an Aamir Khan film. The film’s budget was Rs 5 crore and it opened to rave reviews and also had good collections despite its art house genre.
At the end of its first week, when the movie was declared a hit, netting in Rs 16 crore across India, Khan is believed to have decided to show his appreciation for his wife by gifting her a silver grey BMW 5 series.
Khan, currently at Berlinale, where he’s a member of the jury, was unavailable for comment. However, Rao, who has also accompanied him to Berlin, confirms the news. “I didn’t expect a car at all. So, I was very much surprised to be handed the keys of the BMW. It was a very sweet gesture on Aamir’s part. Of course, I love the gift,” she says.
Interestingly, this is not the first time the actor has gifted a car to someone close. About a week after the release of his production Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Naa, he had gifted an identical same car in navy blue to nephew Imran Khan. The romcom, which catapulted the younger Khan to stardom, had netted Rs 22 crore across India in the first week.
