Want to indulge your inner CSI and investigate a crime scene? That’s what Umang, NM College’s annual festival, will allow you to do, keeping to the theme of wacky events, first started by Wilson College’s BMM fest Polaris, where students dressed as jugglers and stilt-walkers for a carnival parade at Marine Drive.
Says Aayush Puthran, events head of Polaris, “The parade was held at Marine Drive in relation to our Carnival theme this year. This kind of promotional event had never been done before in the city. It attracted more than 1,000 college-goers, despite being scheduled for 7.30 in the morning.” He adds, “Participants came up with unique ideas to present the theme given to them — using innovative costumes and props, and even featuring vegetable carts as floats. One girl surprised many as she dressed up as a mermaid this year.”
And if innovation is the key, can other colleges be far behind? Says Snehajanaki Ramesh, vice-chairperson (Events) of Malhar, St Xavier’s fest, “One of the craziest events at our festival this year will be University of Persistent Pandemonium, where we give participants random tasks like hugging unknown people on the road, organising a street play, singing in public places or even playing Robin Hood. After performing the task, they will have to send us a video as proof and will be judged on how well they do it.” Apart from this, there are other madcap events like acting as different television hosts, an online treasure hunt and glow-in-the-dark painting contest.
NM College’s Umang is another fest where you can be your zany best. Says Harini Warrier, events head of Umang, “One of our events, Investigative Courtroom Trial, has three participants- reporter, lawyer and detective, who are given a crime scene with a list of five suspects. They have to find the criminal and convict him persuasively in a moot court. The winning team will be the one which manages to secure a conviction most convincingly.”
