Here’s your chance to try the brand of beer that your American or British friend is always raving about. Attend the Brewery Voyage to sample 14 varieties of ale, lager, stout, trappist and craft beer from over 11 countries, including Belgium, Italy, Japan, China, Mexico and India itself.
The third edition of the event, an annual summer feature at the Taj Lands End, Bandra, is underway, and will go on till the end of June. “We plan this event during the months of May and June in the lead-up to the monsoon, because this is a time when everyone likes coming in for a chilled beer,” explains Rishi Kumar, assistant food and beverage manager of the hotel.
Kumar enthuses that the beers are available at a price-point that is affordable for all, and apart from the exclusive labels brought in for the promotion, conventional lager brands that are available across the city are available too. For those who need help picking the right kind of beer to suit their palate, the staff at the lounge has been trained to guide customers. “Nowadays, our guests are avid travellers and are well-informed about what they are drinking. Our staff must be aware of the choices available, and what would suit the customer’s demand best,” says Kumar, adding, “When a westerner places an order, he usually asks for a beer by naming the brand, whereas an Indian would just ask for a pint of beer.
The Indian palate is mostly suited to the taste of lagers, so they need to be explained the exclusivity of each style and where it comes from.” Among the types of beer on offer, Kumar recommends you try the wheat beer. “It’s a great drink, but it’s popularity is yet to catch on in India,” he explains. Ask him if the hotel plans to stock any of the brands on a regular basis, and he says, “Availability depends on state excise regulations. We have just started our process of procuring some of these labels, so it may happen in the coming financial year.”
