As the dream girl of Bollywood turns 61 today, she leaves behind a trail of memorable roles. Hema Malini is also turning producer to relaunch her daughter Esha Deol.
The actress made her debut opposite super star Raj Kapoor in Sapno Ka Saudagar in 1968 and made a mark through her performance and screen presence.
But it was Johnny Mere Naam that shot her to fame. She and Dharmendra formed a hit pair for the Hindi celluloid and gave sterling performances in films like Sholay, Seeta aur Geeta, Blackmail and Dream Girl (which later became an adjective inseparable from her name).
Hema defied societal convention by marrying Dharmndra from whom she has two daughters – Esha (also an actress) and Ahana. Her role as the chatterbox Basanti in Sholay, the strong widow in Ek Chaddar Mailli Si or the self-respecting Kusum of Khushboo or the recent ones like Baghban and Veer Zara both opposite icon Amitabh Bachchan demonstrated that she still was good draw at the box office.
