While sections of the Indian media didn’t quite take seriously actor Mallika Sherawat’s claims of being Hollywood star Salma Hayek’s “new-friend” on Twitter — “Hung out last night with my new friend Salma Hayek. Adore her!!” — the Latino actor herself has a confession to make. “I met Mallika briefly at Cannes and she’s lovely. I would love to work with her in Bollywood, but nobody has approached me with this,” says Hayek, putting to rest news reports that claimed the two actors were doing a film on women’s abuse together.
“I would love to do films in Bollywood. I just haven’t gotten any offers yet,” says the actor, speaking to us from Los Angeles. A few years ago, Hayek had started a production company with the specific aim of creating more roles for Latino women in Hollywood, who she feels get left behind, skin colour being a “big problem.” But in Bollywood, that may just be an extra advantage. “Being Latin is one extra limitation in Hollywood,” she laughs.
And it’s not just that. It’s the song and dance in Hindi films that Hayek feels she has the potential to rock Bollywood with. “I can definitely see myself doing the song and dance in Bollywood, and being good at it,” says the actor.
Meanwhile, her most recent film, Grown Ups, that saw a stellar ensemble cast (Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Maya Rudolph among others) come together for the first time, felt almost like “Saturday Night Live (SNL) reunion” for her. When asked if she felt a little out of place, since all her co-actors had worked together before, she says, “It’s very strange. I did SNL once. But when I did it, I really bonded with the girls. Maya (Rudolph) took me under her wing and she really helped me through it, and so did Tina (Fey). Afterwards, I worked with Tina in the TV show 30 Rock, and so I felt I was part of the group again.”
