Laal Chand from Gorakhpur has been selling ice cream in N-block, Connaught Place, for the last 22 years. Living on rent in Paharganj with his son, he carries the big ice-cream machine and vessels of rabri falooda on his bicycle to the stall every day. “My stall is near the outer circle while my son, Sanjay (who joined him three years ago) sells ice cream near the Barakhamba metro station,” says Chand.

The paraphernalia, made of a wooden shelf placed over a few boxes may look meagre but the ice cream definitely isn’t. “I make the falooda, ice cream and rabri myself. The rabri and ice cream is made of pure milk, without any powder or khoya. It takes 50-60 kgs of milk to make rabri and kaju-kesar ice cream everyday,” says the ice-cream seller.

Priced at Rs 10 and Rs 15 for a glassful, the delicacy is refreshing in this scorching heat for nearby office employees and Metro commuters. “This glass of ice-cream-rabri-falooda is an interesting change from the bars and cones available at the ice-cream carts. It’s quite filling,” says Meena, who often walks down from her office for a quick post-lunch dessert.
