For the first time in 32 years, Malhar, the annual festival of St Xavier's College, moved outside the college campus. The street play event, called Galli Galli Mein Show Hain, was held at the courtyard in High Street Phoenix. The participating teams were from IIT Bombay, Jai Hind College, KC College, HR College and NM College.
The street plays were based on social themes such as moral policing, slum redevelopment and child stars on TV. Alex Coutinho, Marketing Head of High Street Pheonix, says, “Our association with Malhar lets us connect to the youth. We want to slowly transform Pheonix into a cultural and social hub.”
Judging Rounds
Sucharita Kanjilal, Chairperson, Malhar 2010, reasons, “We chose High Street Pheonix as our venue partner because it is centrally located. No other venue would provide us with such an eclectic mix of people.”
Actors Namit Das, Ira Dubey, Sarika, Milind Gawli and Anjan Srivastav judged the event. Namit Das and Ira Dubey, both alumni of St Xavier’s, were glad to be a part of the event. Dubey says, “It’s difficult to hold audience attention for long, especially when the theme is social. But the students effectively blended their social messages with a good dose of entertainment.”
Das was equally impressed. He says, “The success of a street play can be gauged from the crowd’s reaction. Also, it is amazing to see students tackle bold issues such as rape.”
