The IIT Bombay campus is no stranger to wildlife, what with crocodiles and leopards straying in from time to time. Now the institution will turn into a tribal village this December, with ‘Tribal Tryst’ being the theme for the Mood Indigo (Mood-I) festival.
Taking ahead innovative themes ranging from ‘Pirates’ in 2009 and The Wild West in 2011, the cultural extravaganza will attempt to push the envelope further this year by vowing to stand up for Mother Earth. The ambience, competitions and performances in this year’s festival will reflect a tribal feel.
It will also emphasise on reviving the environment-friendly tribal culture. “We realised that tribals live in their own fascinating world, which is yet to be explored by today’s youth. Their practices don’t degrade nature, but replenish it,” says Jitesh Phulwani, coordinator, Mood-I 2012.
Team Mood-I is also planning to take contest winners to a few tribal areas in October, before the fest commences in December. “We are planning to organise a free trip for 50 people picked on the basis of their contest essay entries, to a tribal village in India,” says Aditya Patil, publicity and ambience head, Mood-I 2012. “We are already in talks with tribal ministries of some states to help us with the theme.”
The team has also started a pre-fest event called Hakuna Matata — Spread A Smile, which was recently launched by actor Ayushmann Khurrana. For this initiative, Mood-I is inviting smiling pictures of people on its Facebook page, Twitter account or through email, and the best entries get exclusive Mood-I merchandise every week.

{{/usCountry}}“We all have fond memories of the Hakuna Matata song from The Lion King. It’s great that Mood-I has come up with such a campaign,” said Ayushmann Khurrana at the launch. The campaign has already received around 1,000 pictures which will be displayed in a huge mosaic during Mood-I this year, says Vaibhav Choudhary, co-coordinator, Mood-I.
