This New Year’s Eve, Delhi’s singles are getting ready to beat the blues by hiring a date. Escort agencies have raised their rates given the festive frenzy, but that isn’t stopping party animals from booking companions for the big night.
The choice for arm candy extends from college students, corporates and models to foreigners and BPO employees. Depending on their experience and demand, a date-on-hire for the occasion costs anything between Rs 1,000- Rs 70,000.
“A date on New Year’s is for Rs 2,000. If you want to have sex with the date, it will cost you Rs 5,000. You will be charged extra if you take the date home. We can give you any man based on your preferences of complexion, height and built. He will dress according to the occasion,” said the owner of an escort agency when we called up posing as prospective clients.
Most such agencies assure customers that their companions will fit the cool bill. “If you want a date only to celebrate New Year’s and show him off to your friends, it’ll cost Rs 5,000. Full English speaking hai, achhi family se hai. He will be fair, 5’5 tall, and will mix in your crowd,” the owner of another agency told us. A gigolo, who goes by the name Manu, said he was very busy during the time. “I have other requests to pose as a boyfriend too. So please confirm fast,” he said.
Prices are steeper for guys looking for a female date. When we called an escort agency run by a Manav, he gave us a price bracket of Rs 30,000-60,000: “Even if you don’t want to spend the night with her, we have a flat rate for this time as demand is high. Rs 30,000 for an Indian and Rs 50,000 for a Russian.” Meanwhile, many youngsters are lapping up the opportunity to make a quick buck. “New Year means fun and more money, which I spend on shopping,” says Shelly (name changed), a model who works as a part-time escort.

It’s not only young girls and boys who are making fast money by working as escorts. Transgenders, too, are being hired by men who take them to parties in suburbs. Kashish, (name changed), a transgender who’s a sex worker, says, “I strike the best deals around New Year. Facebook is where I get most requests from. Usually, corporate executives take me to parties in farmhouses in Gurgaon and Noida. I get paid Rs 4,000-6,000 for attending one party. If I also offer to spend some time in the car with the client, I get paid around Rs 10,000.”
