Mira Nair is one of those filmmakers of Indian origin, who've earned international fame! Born in Orissa and educated at Delhi University and Harvard University, Mira Nair made waves with her first feature film Salaam Bombay. The movie won her the Golden Camera award besides the Prix du Publique at the Cannes Film Festival in 1988.
Mira he was also nominated for the Oscars.
She began her career by directing documentaries, and one of them India Cabaret, a film about the lives of strippers in a Bombay nightclub, won the award at the American Film Festival in 1986.
Her other films include Mississippi Masala that explores the racial tensions among immigrant Indians from Uganda and resident African-Americans. The Perez Family deals with the Cuban Mariel refugees who came in 1980 while ‘Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love’ is about a 15th century love story set in India.
Mira's known for making socially realistic and hard-hitting films. Monsoon Wedding won accolades and awards all around the globe, most notable being Golden Lion award at the Venice film festival.
Her last film, The Namesake (based on Jhumpa Lahiri’s novel) was released in 2007. Mira is now ready with Amelia Earhart's biopic ‘Amelia’, starring Hilary Swank, Richard Gere and Ewan McGregor.

Production of this film was delayed due to a Writers Guild of America strike that lasted from November 2007 until February 2008. Nair has stated that Shantaram was not dead and that it may be possible for production to begin in 2010.
