Shera stamps a hit at the Post Office

Postage stamps on Shera, the Queen's Baton, Talkatora Stadium and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium have already been launched by India Post and are now in circulation.

Postage stamps onShera, the Queen’s Baton, Talkatora Stadium and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium have already been launched by India Post and are now in circulation.

“Stamps on Shera, the mascot of the Games are popular. Many people are also choosing stamps which portray messages on preserving polar regions and glaciers,” says an official from India post.

India is hosting the World Philately exhibition in February 2011 and the India Post is showcasing the celebration of the centenary of the world’s first airmail flight from Allahabad to Naini.

“We are also advertising the event at the Games village,” says a staff member of India post.

In the visitors book at the Post Office, many international players have recorded their observations that range from “awesome store” to “friendly officials” and “good facilities.”

For the 1958 Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, the stamps released figured themes featuring the Welsh Dragon, to indicate the association of the Games with Wales. The then symbol of the Commonwealth, the Crown surrounded by a chain, was also featured.

In 1970, stamps commemorating the Ninth Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh showed progressive action shots of athletes competing in running, swimming and cycling events.
