After the Covid-19 pandemic, actors Suriya and Jyotika relocated to Mumbai with their children, Diya and Dev. The move was to ensure their kids led a ‘normal’ lifestyle, to bring Jyotika closer to her parents and revive her career in Bollywood. While promoting his upcoming film Vishwanath & Sons, Suriya spoke about finding happiness in their ‘cosy’ 1700 sq ft home rather than the lavish bungalow they left behind in Chennai.
Suriya on finding happiness in Mumbai with Jyotika

Suriya previously mentioned that he can move around freely in Mumbai, whereas in Chennai, he’s usually surrounded by fans. When asked about it in a promotional chat with anchor Suma, his co-star and close friend Radhika Sarathkumar replied and said, “He loves it. Jyotika’s telling me, you know, Suriya loves it. He likes to come. First thing he does is, where’s my dhobi, where’s the guy with my ironing, where’s my shoes? He’ll go make coffee…he will do everything. I watched him when I went there. I feel he’s very content there.”
Suriya also spoke about why he prefers the Mumbai home, stating, “Mumbai is almost like a holiday for me. I work here, then I go for a holiday there. It’s a smaller house. We stay in a 1700 sq ft house. So, two steps bedroom, two steps living room, two steps kitchen, two steps dining area. It’s a nice, cosy house, which gives us a lot of comfort. A lot of memories, a lot of warmth, it’s a lot of love everywhere. I can immediately call Diya or Dev; there’s just one step away. Not many people know what we do there, so it’s nice.”
Radhika then chimed in and added, “Jyo and I talk a lot. She is so happy, so that happiness overflows into her family life. So, he is happy. Sometimes I ask him, you’re going and sitting in Bombay. He says, I’m so happy, and you can feel it.” To which Suriya said, “She has not gone to Russia or Japan. She has gone to her own…her mother’s place. The main priority was, of course, for her parents. But also, work is happening there simultaneously.”

Suriya and Jyotika married on September 11, 2006, in Chennai after dating for a few years. They first met on the set of the 1999 film Poovellam Kettuppar. Their daughter Diya was born in 2007, and their son Dev was born in 2010. After staying in a multi-storied bungalow in Chennai, the couple moved to Mumbai after the pandemic. While TOI reported in 2023 that the couple acquired a 9000 sq ft bungalow worth ₹70 crore in Mumbai, Suriya’s statement seems to confirm a much smaller home.
Vishwanath & Sons, directed by Venky Atluri and starring Suriya, Mamitha Baiju and Radhika, will be released in theatres on August 14.
