Two days before the finance minister, Pranab Mukherjee, announces the 2011-12 budget, we asked 100 youngsters across Delhi, what they want from it. For 22% of those polled, the main point of concern was the price of branded clothes. “I want the prices of branded clothes to go down; it’s very important to the lifestyle of college students,” says Arpita Jerath of Sri Venkateswara College.

A curious request in this category comes from Charu Gupta of IP University, who says, “I demand a cut in prices of lingerie”. Conveyance — oil prices, air fares and auto fares — is second on the list, with 20% votes. “Auto prices should be regulated. Auto drivers loot us on a daily basis,” says Navikaran, a college student. Next on the wishlist is a cut in eating out rates, which got 16% votes. “The taxes we pay after eating out — VAT, service charges — eat away most of our pocket money. I hope they lower these prices!” says Payal Arora of Amity School of Biotechnology. “I want my pizzas and burgers to get cheaper, it’s a matter of survival for us,” says Radhika Abrol of Bhaskar Acharya Rajguru College.
