A politician, the troubled son of a murdered BJP stalwart and a startlet facing criminal charges — it’s an interesting group that’ll gather in the Bigg Boss 2.
Sanjay Nirupam, Rahul Mahajan and Monica Bedi are on the reality TV show that began on Sunday.
Former MP Nirupam’s appearance has raised the most eyebrows. His detractors said it was an effort to get cheap publicity; friends cautioned that the move might boomerang.
But Nirupam told HT in an e-mail: “I’ll try to use television to change the perception of politicians.”
Those watching the curtain-raiser were also surprised to see a tuxedo-clad Rahul Mahajan, son of late BJP general secretary Pramod Mahajan showing participants around the house. “He took two months to say yes,” said Rahul’s friend S.M. Ausaja.
Mahajan Jr. has been dogged by controversy. A few days after his father succumbed to bullet injuries inflicted by brother Pravin in May 2006, he found himself in the centre of a drug scandal that left Mahajan’s secretary Bibek Moitra dead.
Starlet Monica Bedi, out on bail, has been linked with gangster Abu Salem. In 2002, she and Salem were arrested by the Lisbon police for entering Portugal with forged documents. The two were deported to India in November 2005.
