Delhi’s first ever Couture Week began yesterday, amidst high drama in the form of a last minute legal hassle. On Monday, the organising body, Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) was sued by Delhi’s Pearl Academy of Fashion for calling the event ‘Pearls Delhi Couture Week’.

“We sent a notice to FDCI last month, but they paid no attention. It was embarrassing for us, and we wanted it to be clear that we have nothing to do with the event,” says the Academy’s director, Dr AKG Nair. The High Court directed FDCI to change the name to Pearls Infrastructure and Projects Ltd Delhi Couture Week and display a clear message that it has nothing to do with the Pearl Academy.

“Initially, we got a notice to stop the event. Our crisis management team worked all night to follow the court’s directive. The event will go on,” said FDCI president, Sunil Sethi. On Tuesday, the fashion academy issued an Ad saying: ‘The Pearl Academy of Fashion… is in no manner connected with the Delhi Couture Week.’
