Gujarat on Indian fashion scene

Woolen shawls from Gujarat made their way to Will Lifestyle India Fashion Week. James Ferreira, known for giving interesting twists to Indian techniques and fabrics, presented another Indian-inspired collection on Day One of the fashion extravaganza. Aditi Caroli reports.

Woolen shawls from Gujarat made their way to Will Lifestyle India Fashion Week. James Ferreira, known for giving interesting twists to Indian techniques and fabrics, presented another Indian-inspired collection on Day One of the fashion extravaganza.



Designer on his collection

"This time my theme was Gujarat- the woolen shawls of Gujarat which I think are simply beautiful. Last time I did khadi, so this is kind of a continuation of it. I love the weaves, colours and trimmings. I have used Indian colours, made them a little darker and brighter. Batik was used on silk in bright colours and bigger sizes. So there was bottle green, yellow gold, red with pink, electric blue and brown."



Jackets made from shawls, an out of the box idea, certainly stood out.



Indian states and cities are inspiring many designers big time. "I’m so happy that India is inspiring us all. I have used batiks in different shapes and sizes. I have tried to take the USP of India and make it contemporary."



"I do the cutting with one piece of fabric because I truly believe that fashion began with one-piece and will end this way only. It’s like taking the wearabilty of Indian garments and giving it a western silhouette. Comfort and wearability is the USP. Bright colours and traditional fabrics will be in this season," he concluded.
