Gurgaon: Confusing signs lead to chaos at Rajiv Chowk

The recently opened underpasses and flyover at the Rajiv Chowk have not been able to bring much relief commuters, thanks to the poorly placed
signages before the underpass and ill-defined lanes at the intersection.
On January 22, a bidirectional underpass was opened at the Rajiv Chowk, which helped relieve congestion at the major intersection allowing commuters to move easily between old and new Gurgaon.
The two-way underpass was opened for assisting commuters travelling from Civil Lines towards Sohna Road and for those travelling from Sohna Road to go towards the district courts, mini secretariat, Civil Lines and Pataudi with more ease and bypass the congestion at the junction.
However, the engineering changes meant to streamline traffic movement, have left commuters confused.
Commuters, many of whom do not use this route daily, claim that until they reach just short of the underpass, they are not able to decipher where it leads to. The signages have been placed just before the entrance of the underpass, and it is proving to be a major obstacle as commuters are often driving without any sense of direction.
“Motorists approach the underpass at high speeds and barely have any time to react. They often miss the signages. Authorities need to relocate the signages 40-50 metres before the entry to the underpass, instead of placing signages right at the entrance. It took me a few days to understand where the underpasses leads,” Bhanu Sharma, a resident of Civil Lines, said.
Another factor that commuters said contributes to the prevailing confusion is the absence of medians.
At the junction below the flyover, unacquainted commuters often end up coming head to head with traffic coming from the opposite direction.
“I have seen several commuters, who are not aware of the directions for going towards Civil Lines, converging with traffic coming from Civil Lines and heading towards New Delhi, at the junction. This not only creates an artificial road block but also endangers the lives of motorists,” Anand Rungta, a resident of Sector 47, said.
Additionally, at the junction on the main road, in the absence of median strips, lanes are not clearly demarcated affecting traffic flow.
Efforts made by the traffic police to take some corrective measures only adds to the confusion as commuters find cones put up in new spots.
It is the responsibility of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to install traffic signages, streetlights and other vital road utilities at the underpass.
Ashok Sharma, project director of the highways authoritywhich built the flyover and underpass at Rajiv Chowk, did not respond to repeated calls and texts.
Recently, Hindustan Times also highlighted the risk posed to commuters by absence of lights inside the underpasses at Rajiv Chowk and Signature Tower that were inaugurated on January 22. Thereafter, the Rajiv Chowk underpass was temporarily closed to install lights.
