Gurgaon: MCG’s on-the-spot property tax collection fetches Rs 75 lakh

After sending out attachment notices to 604 establishments for failing to clear property tax dues last month, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) officials have now resorted to on-the-spot collection of property tax and in its first attempt recovered Rs 75 lakh in Sector 44.

The initiative holds significance as there was a 68% drop in MCG’s property tax collection in 2016. This led to the civic body sending out advance attachment notices and introducing stringent property tax collection measures to increase its collection prior to the culmination of the financial year and reduce the tax deficit.

According to MCG officials, a property tax collection team reached the premises of Sudha Apparel, Tejaswi Impacts and PSU Finn Pvt Ltd for attaching their properties as they owed Rs 60 lakh, Rs 10 lakh and Rs 5 lakh respectively. After negotiations, owners of these establishments agreed to pay their dues.

“Owners need to clear their dues before March 31. Property tax defaulters owe the MCG over Rs 250 crore and, hence, stringent measures are being adopted for recovery,” SS Rohilla, spokesperson, MCG,said.

Although property tax payment can be made till March 31, long queues of taxpayers are a regular feature at the citizen facilitation centres (CFCs) in Sector 34 and the Civil Lines. In February, the MCG received over Rs 9.25 crore in property tax payments.
