Gurgaon to get its first government university within two years

The Haryana cabinet approved the demand for a university at Kankrola village, 24 kilometers from Gurgaon city, on Tuesday, but city residents will have to wait for two more years to get the institution as there is no space available to start a temporary campus of the university.

Rao Narbir Singh, Haryana public works department (PWD) minister and an MLA from Gurgaon’s Badshahpur constituency, had pushed for a university at Kankrola village that falls under his constituency. Singh had pursued the matter with the state government, following which chief minister (CM) Manohar Lal Khattar had announced on April 10 last year that a varsity would be set up in the village.

Almost an year later, on April 2 this year, Singh announced at a public function that the foundation stone of the university would be laid this month, but refrained from announcing a date. His spokesperson said the date would be announced after consultation with the CM and completing other formalities.

The chief minister had announced that the university would be set up across 50 acres at a cost of Rs 400 crore.

Parents and the students had welcomed the announcement as many end up joining universities in various parts of Delhi-NCR for higher studies.
