MCG elections: Actors and sportspersons help civic bodies draw voters

With Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) elections scheduled to take place on September 24, celebrities from the state lend their support.

At the amphitheatre of CyberHub Gurgaon, actor Rajkummar Rao said loudly to the crowd: “We have to understand the power of voting!”

Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) elections are scheduled on September 24, and the officials are ensuring that people come out of homes to cast their vote. And, in the run up to the election day, the MCG is roping in celebrities to spread the awareness and importance to vote, to Gurgaonites.

“My heart is still in Gurugram, though I live in Mumbai,” said actor Rajkummar Rao, on his visit to CyberHub on Monday, to encourage the people in the audience to exercise their vote. Alongside revisiting his memories of growing up in the Millennium City, he even pledged with the residents, to vote in the upcoming elections. “Voting is the most important right we have in a democracy. We have to understand the power of voting. It’s that one day where we, citizens of the country, are the most powerful people. There is no point complaining next 4-5 years, ki kuch nahi ho raha hai (that nothing is happening). Unless you cast your vote, and contribute in the progress of this country, it will not become a supreme developed nation,” he said.

Recently the MCG launched a mobile application — vote 4 MCG — to encourage people in Haryana to vote. The officials also roped in Olympic wrestler Sakshi Malik and Olympic para athlete Deepa Malik, to make videos urging people to be unbiased while voting. “Your vote will decide the progress of the city. Only we, as citizens, can choose the right people [and ensure that] the progress and health of the city is in the right hands,” Malik said in a video posted on Twitter.

Akhil Kumar, Indian boxer, also featured in a video that appeals the residents to come out and vote on the day of the election. “My vision for Gurgaon is that it should continue to progress. Vote for the one who is honest, and is able to work. When we start contributing in a small way, only then the foundation of a nation is built.”
