Residents of Sector 21 have been facing an acute water shortage for the last three days after the master pipeline to the area ruptured while a sewage pipe was being repaired. The interruption in supply has forced residents to depend solely on private water tankers.

Residents are forced to depend on private tankers as Huda is not supplying tanker water because of pending payments.

Water is supplied to Sector 21 and other adjoining areas from the Haryana Urban Development Authority’s (Huda) Basai water treatment plant.

“We have complained to Huda officials and district administration regarding the interruption in supply for the last three days, but no action has been taken,” Col (retd) Umed Singh, president of Sector 21 residents welfare association (RWA) said.

Hemmed between three villages Dundahera, Mollahera, and Salapur, residents say that a number of illegal sewer and water connections were allowed by the civic authority, putting pressure on the ageing infrastructure.

Col Singh says the problem started after an old sewage pipeline was damaged near the police mess. “For the last 10 days, residents have been struggling with the sewage leakage as the pipe was damaged because of excess pressure. While workers were digging to repair this pipe, our water pipe was also damaged,” he said.

Residents also said that as the sector is on the end of the supply line, the urban authority should create an alternative so that they do not have to struggle for water around the year.

Residents say an alternative connection from a newly laid water pipeline from Krishna Chowk to Dundahera on the old Delhi-Gurgaon road can solve the problem. “If we can get a connection from this line to Salapur Chowk, things can improve,” he said.

Huda executive engineer Jagdish Sorot said that his team was on the spot to rectify the problem. “We are working overnight to resolve the issue and from tomorrow morning, the water supply in the sector will be normalised,” he said.
