The first trailer for Tim Burton's animated film Frankenweenie in 3D debuted March 1 online, taking a twist on the Frankenstein story with a boy and his dog.

The black-and-white stop-motion animation recalls the director's 1993 film The Nightmare Before Christmas in his dark yet whimsical horror humour.

This feature-length version of a 1984 short film with the same title by Tim Burton (Alice in Wonderland) follows a boy who loses his beloved dog Sparky when it is hit by a car and dies.

In this homage to the classic Mary Shelley tale, with references to Igor and the Bride of Frankenstein, the sad young Victor Frankenstein stitches his dog back together with bolts and zaps him with lightning to attempt to resuscitate his puppy.

The voice cast includes Winona Ryder (Black Swan), Martin Landau (HBO's Entourage), Catherine O'Hara (Away We Go) and Martin Short (The Santa Clause 3).

Frankenweenie will be released in IMAX 3D on October 4-5 in the UK, France and European markets, Russia and North America, followed by Hong Kong, then Brazil and Australia in November.
