Reality show fans have always had plenty to choose from when it comes to music-based formats. And if host Nick Lachey is to be believed, The Sing-Off is the toughest among them all.

The show, which started in 2009, sees singers competing in groups, performing a capella (singing without instruments) songs. Lachey, ex-98 Degrees singer and now host of the popular show, explains, “All reality shows are different, but I believe this is the hardest show to do well on, because it’s very hard to performa capella night in and night out.”

The Sing-Off, which airs on Vh1 tonight, is also challenging because singers compete in groups. “You could have a singer who is a brilliant solo artiste, but singing a capella in a group takes a lot of blend and not everyone can pull it off,” remarks Lachey.

The singer is currently making time for his own musical career too, with an album coming up early in 2012, after a gap of six years. Reminiscing about his time with his boy band, 98 Degrees, which disbanded in 2002, he says, “Those were fun days. We are all in contact and remain close friends. We always prided ourselves on doing a capella. In fact, singing a capella in Motown’s (record company) offices was the very reason we were offered a record deal, so doing this show seemed a great way to give back to an art form that has given me so much.”
