“One of our biggest challenges has been... when you look at the learning outcomes of science and mathematics in our schools (class 6 to 8)... learning outcomes have dipped to at least 30%,” Irani said at the fourth convocation of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Kolkata at Mohanpur in Nadia.

“The worry is this... how do we get bright students into scientific institutions of calibre like IISERs, so that we see more scientific and research output in our country,” the minister added.
