As the Cockroach Janta Party turned its focus to the condition of government-run schools in Rajasthan, the state government informed the Assembly on Friday that as many as 611 schools are functioning without their own buildings.
Highlighting the lack of proper infrastructure in schools, Rajasthan's BJP government shifted the blame on the previous government led by Congress under chief minister Ashok Gehlot, India Today reported.
Schools without buildings, govt blames Congress
The government, referring to an audit conducted after the Jhalawar school accident, said the report had exposed the poor condition of government schools. The BJP dubbed the poor condition of government schools as the “sin” of the previous Congress government that the current administration was trying to fix. At least seven students died and 28 injured last year in July when the roof a school building in Jhalawar, Rajasthan collapsed while the students were gathering for morning prayers.
The government made the disclosure on the lack of infrastructure in schools in response to a question from Leader of Opposition (LoP) Tika Ram Jully. According to Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) data for 2025-26 under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan cited by India Today, 611 government schools in the state do not have buildings.
CJP's school ‘inspection’ campaign
The numbers that draw a grim picture on Rajasthan's education system comes amid the attack on CJP volunteers who were on their way to inspect a government school in Jaipur’s Bagru assembly constituency.
The incident occurred near Rampura Kanwarpura village, where CJP co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka and his team planned to visit a government school to assess its infrastructure and facilities.
“They attacked us and fractured the arm of one of our volunteers,” he said, alleging that those involved were workers of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In a video purportedly showing the incident, a group of people can be seen confronting the CJP team, while chants of “Jai Shri Ram” can be heard.
According to the party, the visits were aimed at assessing the condition of school buildings, the education system and facilities available to students.
Ranka had earlier posted on social media about the condition of the primary school at Rampura Kanwarpura. According to him, the main school building has become unsafe and has been closed after portions of the roof and beams deteriorated. The structure is being supported with iron angles.
Students have consequently been shifted to a shed around 50 metres from the main building, where they are studying under a tin roof, Ranka alleged. He also claimed that animal fodder was lying inside the shed and that bricks had fallen from portions of the structure.
