8 die as SUV falls into river while crossing bridge in Ghazipur

Eight people died when an SUV they were travelling in fell into Mangai river while crossing a deteriorating bridge near Kandhvara region of Ghazipur district early on Monday.

The deceased were identified as Mansa Devi (30), Tetari Devi (35), Baijnath (60), Pinki (14), Jitendra (10), Sharda Devi (50), Ramraji Devi (55), and Supari (17), police said.

Devi, wife of Bujharat, a resident of Barharipur, had been bitten by a snake late on Sunday evening and was being taken to Satti Mai Temple in Amava in Kareemuddinpur to reverse the effect of poison through incantation, they said.

While they were crossing the bridge near Kandhvara region under Mohammadpur police station limits, the SUV fell into the river. The driver swam to safety while others drowned.

Locals claimed they had complained about the broken bridge to authorities, but it was not repaired.
