The resolutions to rename both the existing airports were moved, on behalf of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, first in the Legislative Assembly and later in the Legislative Council, and were approved unanimously.

In a resolution, the Andhra Pradesh government requested the Aviation Ministry to change the names of the Tirupati airport as Sri Venkateswara Airport, Tirupati, after the famous deity.

In another resolution, it wanted Vijayawada airport at Gannavaram renamed as Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao Airport, Amaravati, after the legendary Telugu film star and former Chief Minister.

Since the Vijayawada airport is located in NTR’s home district Krishna, the government wanted it named after him.
