The proposed alignments will provide much needed respite to commuters forced to travel through some of the densest and heavily congested parts in the Pune Metropolitan Area. “The city with a population of 5.2 million has inadequate public transport system. The metro will considerably reduce the traffic congestion and will bring in fast, comfortable, safe, pollution-free and affordable mass transportation system,” said a senior Union urban development (UD) ministry official.

The metro project will be implemented by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited, a jointly owned company of Centre and the Maharashtra government.
