Former Bihar minister’s wife robbed of gold chain at gunpoint in Patna

CCTV footage showed that three persons on a motorcycle had done a recce of their target twice before accosting Suprabha Singh,wife of a former Bihar minister Mithilesh Kumar Singh and forcing her to handover the ornament to them.

The wife of a former Bihar minister became the latest victim of motorcycle-borne chain snatchers in Patna on Friday.

Unidentified criminals robbed Suprabha Singh, wife of Mithilesh Kumar Singh, a minister in Ram Sundar Das-led government in late 1970s, of her gold chain at gunpoint when the couple was taking morning stroll at Kankarbagh in central Patna.

The incident, which took place around 6.15 am, has triggered panic among residents of the colony, who have witnessed over half-a-dozen similar cases within a month.

CCTV footage revealed that three persons on a motorcycle had done a recce of their target twice before accosting Suprabha Singh and forcing her to handover the ornament to them.

“Chachi chain de dijiye nahin to main goli mar doonga (Auntie, hand over the chain, else I will shoot you), is what the criminals told me,” she said. She “Finding no way out, I hurled the chain to another woman on morning walk. However, before she could pick it up, the snatchers collected it and sped away,” she added.

“We have filed a police complaint but are not hopeful of the robbers being caught,” said Suprabha Singh, adding that the criminals also attempted to snatch the gold chain from other women, but failed.

“I even tried to note down the registration number of their motorcycle but it was handwritten and illegible,” she said.

An earlier victim of chain snatching, Mukta Singh, said “A couple of such incidents were reported from the area, barely few days ago.” It seemed the criminals had no fear of police, she said.

“The footage of CCTVs cameras installed in the area showed that three criminals had made two rounds of the area before targeting Suprabha Singh,” said a police official.

City superintendent of police Chandan Kumar Kushwaha said, “We have registered an FIR and trying to trace the robbers through CCTV footage.”
