A gang of about 10 robbers looted passengers and molested women in three trains on the outskirts of Kanpur and Unnao outers early on Wednesday morning.
Over the span of 45 minutes, the criminals, who were armed with country-made pistols attacked 12 passengers in Lok Manya Tilak, Vaishali Express and Kanpur-Lucknow passenger trains.
The victims were left injured and were admitted to LLR and UHM hospitals.
IG Railways, LK Antony said the government railway police (GRP) Kanpur would investigate the matter. A separate inquiry will also be conducted into complaints that the GRP didn’t act when the passengers complained about the incident.
Angry passengers took to protesting at the railway station after police inaction.
The criminals struck three trains in quick succession and held passengers in a general compartment at gunpoint while looting them. They also allegedly molested some women passengers, threatening those resisting the attacks with rape of the women and murder of the children.
Passengers complained to the GRP after the attackers left, at the Kanpur Central station and stopped the trains by pulling chains and demanded treatment of those injured.
The station master reached the station at 3 am, after which the injured passengers were shifted to hospitals. During the day, SP railways, Kavindra visited the crime scene and ordered increased patrolling in the area.
