An associate of Karnataka home minister G Parameshwar was hacked to death by a gang of six assailants in Kolar district on Monday, police said.

The incident happened two days after a gram panchayat member was murdered in Malur taluk of the district.

The district Congress leader who was killed on Monday in Srinivasapur taluk of Kolar district has been identified as M Srinivas, popularly known as Counselor Srinivas, who also shared close ties with former speaker B Ramesh Kumar.

The attackers targeted Srinivas while he was going to inspect an under-construction bar and restaurant building on Mulabagilu road in Srinivasapur taluk, police officials said.

According to eyewitnesses, the six masked assailants, wielding knives and other weapons, attacked Srinivas. The Congress leader suffered grievous injuries on his chest and head, resulting in severe bleeding. He was rushed to R L Jalappa Hospital in Kolar where he succumbed to his injuries.

“Prima facie, it seems that political and personal rivalry due to property is main cause of murder,” Kolar superintendent of police M Narayan told HT. “During the preliminary investigation, a dog team was deployed at the crime scene, where a bag containing lethal weapons was discovered. It is suspected that pepper spray may have been used on Srinivas during the attack,” Narayan

The assailants had allegedly been following Srinivas for two days before attacking him. Narayan said a special team under a deputy superintendent of police (DySP) has been formed to trace the accused . “A case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at Srinivasapura police station,” the SP said..

State home minister Parameshwar and former speaker Ramesh Kumar visited R L Jalappa Hospital on Monday evening and consoled the family members of Srinivas. “I have instructed police to nab the culprits soon and bring them to justice,” Parameshwar told reporters.

The autopsy was conducted and the body was handed over to family members, SP Narayan said.
