“Gandhiji qualified to practise law. He did not have a law degree.... (But) Just look how educated he was...Our Father of the Nation,” Sinha said.

Lieutenant governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha Friday claimed that Mahatma Gandhi did not have a “single university degree”, adding that a lot of educated people believe that Gandhiji had a law degree, but he did not have any degree, Sinha said.

Underlining that people should aim for more than just “degree education”, Sinha said: “Who would say Gandhiji was not educated? Nobody has the courage to say that. But did you know that he did not have a single university degree or qualification. There are many of us who think that Mahatma Gandhi had a law degree. No, he did not. His only qualification was a high school diploma. He qualified to practise law. He did not have a law degree…. (But) Just look how educated he was…Our Father of the Nation,” he added.

He further heaped praises on Gandhi for always following the path of truth, “Gandhi made a significant contribution to the country. But truth was the central focus of everything that was accomplished. If you look at all the aspects of his life, there was nothing besides truth in his life. Whatever the challenges, Mahatma Gandhi never abandoned truth & identified his inner voice. As a result, he became Father of the Nation”, he said.

Sinha's remarks sparked a debate on social media, with the leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) party in Telangana mocking the BJP leader, “WhatsApp university graduates after all,” he tweeted along with the video.
