Monsoon Highlights: 10 dead in Nagpur in last 24 hours, IMD forecast more heavy rain

Parts of south Gujarat and Kutch-Saurashtra regions received very heavy rain in last 24 hours leaving 14 people dead, while over 31,000 were evacuated so far this rainy season, news agency PTI reported. 

"Fourteen people lost their lives in the last 24 hours. Nine of the deaths were due to drowning," state disaster management minister Rajendra Trivedi told reporters on Wednesday. 

Section 144 has been imposed in all tourists places in Pune in view of the IMD's warning of heavy rainfall in the district. The administration hasAdmn prohibited entry within a radius of 1 km to these spots from July 14-17 Action will be taken if orders are violated.

The Modak-Sagar lake, that supplies drinking water to Mumbai, overflowed on Wednesday after heavy rainfall in the city. 

The IMD said on Wednesday that Telangana will have light to moderate rain over most places, adding heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places. 

Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel on Wednesday reviewed the rain situation in five districts of the state- Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Navsari, Dang and Vaslad. 

Patel urged the administrative officers of all the rain-affected districts to ensure that the people living in the shelters get adequate food and other necessary facilities.

Schools and colleges in Maharashtra's Palgarh district will closed on Thursday in view of heavy rainfall.

Authorities in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand have set up an automatic weather station at Kedarnath for getting round the clock precise weather updates from the Himalayan temple town, officials said on Wednesday.

The weather station was established with the help of scientists from IIT-Kanpur, they said.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said his government, with the help of the Centre plans to introduce the new sea wave breaker technology to find out a permanent solution to sea erosion in the coastal region.

The sea wave breaker technology will be installed along a one-km stretch in the coast and its effectiveness will be tested before taking future course of action, he said.

While no alert has been issued for Bengaluru, more than 7 districts in Karnataka, namely Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Kodagu, Chikmagalur, Shimoga and Udupi are on ‘orange’ alert and may see heavy rain.

The districts which were issued 'orange' warning are: Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Bolangir, Ganjam and Nayagarh. Similarly, Yellow Warning (Heavy rainfall) are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Rayagada, Gajapati, Khurda, Puri, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Boudh, Sonepur, Bargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal and Keonjhar. This apart, Light to moderate rain or thundershower very likely to occur at most places over the districts of Odisha.

Maharashtra | Intense to very intense rainfall is expected in Mumbai, Kalyan, Thane and Navi Mumbai till 1 pm today, says India Meteorological Department (IMD).

> There was water-logging up to 1.5 to two feet at the Andheri subway, following which traffic was divert to the S V Road, a police official said. 

> Flooding was also reported at the Kamani junction in Kurla and traffic there was normal. 

> In the Deonar eastern suburb, there was water-logging up to 0.5 feet at Neelam Junction. 

> There was similar inundation on the Mankhurd railway bridge and traffic was moving slow, PTI reported.

Local train services on the Central Railway operating between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus(CSMT)- Kalyan/Karjat/Kasara operating with delays by 10 minutes due to heavy rainfall. Normal operation of local trains on the Western Railway as of now.

A ‘red’ alert has been issued for Kolhapur, Palghar, Nashik, Pune, and Ratnagiri districts in Maharashtra for heavy rains till July 14.
